Perimeter

 

Perimeter is one of the easiest formulas to use in math. Learned early on, it is simple and FUN to use!  

Perimeter is the measurement of the outside of a shape. The number you calculate with the forumlas is the perimeter.

 

Example!

 

To find the perimeter of a shape, you must first determine what shape it is. See the different types of formulas

below and find the one that corresponds to your shape. Once you know this you can move to the formula and fill in the blanks.

For example the square. All you need to find is the length of one side, after this you can multiply it by 4 to find the full length of the outside of the shape.

 

Formulas for finding Perimeter

 

 

s = Side , a,b,c = Side ,  r = Radius , π = pi
Shape Formula
Square 4s
Rectangle 2a + 2b
Triangle a + b + c
Circle 2πr

*Different letters that mean the 'Side' are just substitutes for different sides. A will be one side with the length of 4cm and B will be another with the length 8cm.*

*When you have 3 different letters representing 3 different sizes, that will be for finding the perimeter of a triangle.*

 

Real Life Applications

An example of a real life application of use of perimeter is carpentry. Specifically someone who builds fences.

You would need to know how large the perimeter of a lot or proptery would be to determine how long the fence will be,

how much wood you will need (or other material) and how long it might take to make the fence.

There are many other applications for the use of perimeter too.

 


 

Area

To find the area of a shape you know atleast 2 things, Length and Width. For other shapes than square and rectangle, you need to know more.

 

Area is always despayed in the measurement squared. Ex. 106cm2

 

Squares and Rectangles

 

To find the area of a square or rectangle you need just length and width. Length is always bigger than width, but it doesnt

really matter. When you find the length and width all you need to do is multiply them together and you will reach your answer, that being the total area.

 

Circles

 

For circles its a little bit different. You need to find the radius of the circle and and use a special math 'number' called Pi which is represented by the π symbol.

The number is an infinite number that is normally rounded to 3.14 as to not cause harm to brains.

To get the radius you measure from the center of the circle out to one edge. That number is the radius. When you have that you need to square the radius then multiply that number by pi.

This resulting number will be the answer, thus achieveing the area!

*Using diameter is the same as radius, the only change is that you measure the whole width of the circle and divide by 2 to find the radius. You then continue on as seen above.*

 

 

Formulas for finding Area

 

L = Length ,  B = Base , W = Width , H = Height , r = Radius , π = pi
Shape Formula
Square L x W = Area
Rectangle L x W = Area
Circle (Radius) A = πr2
Circle (Diameter) A = πr2
Triangle A= B x H

 

Real Life Applications

A real world use of area is in a profession such as contrustion or engineering. When planning to build

a building you need to figure out how much that building can hold in terms of floors and people. It will also

give an estimate on how much material you will need to build it and how many people are needed for the job.

There are many other applications for the use of area too.

 

 


 

Volume

Calculating volume is very similar to calculating area and perimeter. The only difference from area is you multiply by the Height to get your final answer.

Another difference is that you can substitute Length as Base.

 

To find the volume of a cube, the calculation is done by getting the size of a side. When you have that you substitute that number with 's' and cube it.

This will give you your volume.

 

Volume is always despayed in the measurement cubed. Ex. 106cm3

Real Life Applications

A real life application of use of volume is in companies that make bottles, barrels or any other sorts of containers.

Generally there is a standard of how much liquid can fit inside a water bottle for example, and you would

need to be able to use volume to figure that out in a real world job or application.

There are many other applications for the use of volume too.
